Steelers Wheel 1972 hit or the sentiment of the coming UK election?
It’s hard to avoid the feeling that come the time to mark my X on the 4th July it will truly be a case of well I don’t know why I came here tonight, but I got the feeling something ain’t right.
Never has the choice being so uninspiring, never has the situation been so pivotal.
To the left we have labour leader Keith Starmer, what seems the mortal incarnation of Red Dwarfs Kryten, the personification a political droid’s ambition.
Perhaps the most significant element of his personality is the display of synthetic sincerity. As with Kryten it’s hard to escape the believed his presented persona is purely a matter of programming and ambition to reach the levers of power. From human rights lawyer to Director of Public Prosecutions to Knight of the Realm, Labour MP, supporter and cheer leader of Jeremy Corbin’s leadership and manifesto to Party leader, his ambition and willing to tack and gib in the political winds shows either an astounding lack of principal or an ambition for power that, on his morality score card, justifies its abandonment.
One thing seems sure, Starmer is a well left of centre activist, apostil of the large state and the left’s mission to shape the population into a client community, dependant on the state for its wealth and health and, accepting of its dogmas.
His presented prospectus is a masterclass in saying nothing. Promising not to increase the core triumphant of income tax, NI & VAT is meaningless when so many more taxation levers are available to pull. Simply look at the historic balance between the words and actions of his Party and the catalogue of statements made over passed years by Starmer and his top team. A team made up of individuals who have never stepped outside the tramlines of political activity into the real world of labour and wealth creation.
How many can we name from memory? How many would you trust with your money? How many will prove themselves other than clowns?
Looking right we find Rishi Sunak and his rabble of rats fighting in their own bag as they disintegrate before our eyes under the weight of their serial failures. Brexit, COVID, , Immigration, Financial Storms, they have faced many challenges, but the fact is they have failed;
Brexit – failed to grasp the opportunities and failed to deliver on the wish of the 17 million people who voted “Yes”.
COVID – failed to understand the impact of locking down the population, education, industry, health care and the consequence of printing a never-ending supply of money to pay for their choices.
Immigration - failed to gain control of either the fact or narrative
The list runs much longer but the picture is clear – despite a whole raft of what could be held as mitigating circumstances, it’s one of serial failure by a collection of self-serving individuals who prior to Sunak were led by the definition of a political Joker – a mantel that Sunak cannot shed and one that his Party's current image and many of his MPs, now candidates, wholly merit.
So, what’s the choice?
To the left Starmer. A man with a mission, a mission he does his very best to hide. A mission that will complete what Blaire and Brown stated a mission to change the country fundamentally and irreversibly. He is not a natural leader and has clearly demonstrated his will to bend in the political winds. But the fact is He is set to win and win big.
To the right Sunak. If the contest was to be for the role of CEO or CFO of say Google Sunak would walk it, but it’s not. The contest is to lead our country and it’s a contest he and his party has already lost.
We face the most challenging circumstances since 1936, we are not at the Munich moment of 1938 but with the situation in Ukraine, China, the Middle East and, the disintegration of politics in the coming US election we are not far from it.
This is a time for true statesmanship, to unite and to focus on the core of what England represents. On what we have achieved over time, our true values of tolerance, equality before the law, opportunity, invention, creation of wealth – in short on what we stand for as a people.
It is a serious time and a time for serious politicians able to deliver stability, direction and clear leadership. Leadership and direction based in a clear understanding of our history and values not political ambition and dogma .
Sadly, it is also a time to face disappointment as the choice on 4th July is limited to either a collection of clowns or a pack of jokers.
